Maryland Inheritance Tax Repealed  (Partially)

--Maryland's Legislative Assembly for the year 2000 passed the only significant tax bill for this session, a bill to abolish the inheritance tax for "lineal" heirs and siblings.
House Speaker Casper R. Taylor Jr. favored abolishing the tax completely while Senate President Mike Miller supported a bill that would have repealed the tax only for certain heirs--children, grandchildren, spouses, etc.
In the end, Senator Miller won the battle and the final version of the bill only eliminated the tax paid by direct lineal heirs as well as siblings. Collateral heirs such as nieces and nephews still must pay the inheritance tax. (Of course in some instances, these are the only surviving relatives.)
Governor Parris Glendening signed the bill which took effect on July 1, 2000. Like Miller, the Governor supported only a partial cut in the inheritance tax, but not full repeal.

Jim Crawford's position:  We should still work to get full repeal of this regressive tax. Why should an estate be taxed at all when taxes were paid on all earnings over the entire lifetime of the person as they accumulated their estate ??? This is truly an unfair tax on earnings already taxed!

Help put an end to this insanity -- elect Jim Crawford as Delegate to Annapolis.
